The Road Less Travelled: Finding My Way Into Talent Acquisition

My professional journey so far has been an interesting one. Today I work in talent acquisition — I am a recruiter. But until five years ago if you had asked me what I wanted to do, you would hear me say something along the lines of research scientist or professor. By 2019 my answer had evolved to the likes of product management or business development. Recruitment was not part of the plan. If you’d told me in 2016 that I would end up being a recruiter or that Donald Trump would become the President of the United States, I would have laughed you out of the room. Fate had other plans however, and both of those things happened.

My grandmother was a rebel in her time. It was 1967 in rural India and she was 36 years old, when she left her two children in their father’s care for a year and flew off to the UK to study advanced Mathematics — on a Commonwealth Bursary (scholarship). She taught Math in a school that she also helped build from scratch. My mother had followed in her footsteps, teaching and writing textbooks on Mathematics for primary school.
